OSHA updates arc flash hazard guidance
December 2, 2024
OSHA updated its arc flash guidance for employees working on energized electrical equipment. Arc flash incidents can occur in any setting with electrical equipment, but typically involve large electrical panels, transformers, and the like. These incidents can ignite clothing, cause structural fires, and cause severe or fatal burns.
The new guidance, the first in almost 20 years, helps employers and employees ensure that arc flash protective clothing and equipment are provided and worn by anyone working near energized equipment. The guidance consists of four parts:
- Protecting employees from electric-arc flash hazards, a detailed document for employers that includes recommendations for protecting employees as well as descriptions of mandatory safety and health standards.
- Common electrical work myths, a one-sheet guide for employees to help dispel common myths surrounding electrical work.
- Establishing boundaries around arc flash hazards, a document for employees to better understand the three types of boundaries to consider when approaching energized electrical equipment.
- Being aware of arc flash hazards, a document aimed at helping employees identify, assess, and control arc flash hazards.
This new guidance, as well as additional resources, can be found on OSHA’s website.
