2024 Updates
Key changes contained in the April 1, 2024 edition of CVSA's North American Standard Out of Service Criteria Handbook:
- “Missing S-cam shaft bushing” being added to the list of defects that count toward the 20% defective brakes standard
- Adding mismatched ball/hitch couplers and coupler latches not in use to the OOSC
- Clarifying that a driver that neglected to turn the light on when required is not to be placed out of service, provided when the vehicle is inspected all of the lights are functioning
- Not placing a vehicle out of service if it has an automatic tire inflation system (ATIS) and the system can maintain tire pressure on a tire with a leak in the tread area
2025 Updates
Key changes contained in the April 1, 2025 edition of CVSA's North American Standard Out of Service Criteria Handbook:
- A driver supervising a driver with a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) must be fully qualified to operate the CDL-required vehicle the CLP holder is driving (if not, the CLP driver cannot continue to drive).
- All drivers without a valid medical certificate when required will be placed out of service (this removes a previous exception in the OOSC).
- A vehicle with an air hose that is marked as another type of hose (such as a fuel or hydraulic hose) will be placed out of service.
- A cracked, broken, or missing U-bolt plate is now an out-of-service condition.
- A sidewall leak will result in a tire will result in an out-of-service order, even if the vehicle is equipped with an automatic tire inflation system that is keeping up with the leak.
