More than a quarter of all work-related fatalities happen in occupations that require driving or the transportation of goods. This is despite having advanced driver assistance systems. There simply is no substitute for good defensive skills. Collision avoidance systems can help reduce the number of crashes, but they will never completely eliminate them. Mindful drivers who are aware of their surroundings help prevent collisions.

Defensive driving is intentionally driving in a way that reduces the risk of an accident. However, there are no regulations on how to drive defensively. The government does not require training on defensive driving, but it is essential for keeping drivers and their vehicles safe.

This curriculum is designed to help drivers develop their defensive driving skills. Specifically, it offers best practices on how to anticipate the potential for danger and avoid it.

The Canada Driver Training: Defensive Driving Curriculum consists of these 9 courses:  

1. Visual Search is designed to help commercial drivers learn the skills required to conduct an effective visual search. (English 73613; Canadian French 73614)
2. Communication is designed to help commercial drivers effectively communicate with other drivers and develop the skills to understand others’ communications. (English 73615; Canadian French 73616)
3. Speed and Space Management is designed to help commercial drivers learn how to manage their speed and space while driving. (English 73768; Canadian French 73769)
4. Night Driving is designed to help commercial drivers learn how to improve their safety while driving at night. (English 73617; Canadian French 73618)
5. Extreme Driving Conditions is designed to help commercial drivers learn how to prepare for driving in extreme conditions and operate safely when they encounter them. (English 73619; Canadian French 73620)
6. Hazard Perception is designed to help commercial drivers learn how to identify and avoid hazards while driving. (English 73621; Canadian French 73622)
7. Skid Control and Recovery is designed to help commercial drivers learn how to respond to skids in a safe manner. (English 73623; Canadian French 73624)
8. Driving Emergencies is designed to help commercial drivers learn how to recognize and respond to driving emergencies in a safe manner. (English 73625; Canadian French 73626)
9. Distracted Driving is designed to help commercial drivers recognize and manage distractions while on the road. (English 73627; Canadian French 73628)
