Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction is May 2-6

May 2-6 marks the ninth annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction. Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction employees. In 2020, there were over 350 fatal falls on construction sites, accounting for 34 percent of all construction fatalities.

Employers can participate in this voluntary event by providing a toolbox talk on a safety topic such as ladders, scaffolds, or roofing, or by conducting safety equipment inspections, developing rescue plans, or discussing hazards.

Participation in the Stand-Down is not limited to the construction industry, and businesses of any size can participate. If employees are not exposed to fall hazards, employers can use the Stand-Down as an opportunity to have a conversation with employees about the other job hazards they face, protective measures, and the company’s safety policies and goals. It also can be an opportunity for employees to talk to management about fall and other job hazards they see.
