New MEWP standards go into effect in North America
April 12, 2022
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) previously updated its A92 aerial lift standards, now called mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). Check the serial number plate on your lift to determine what version of A92.20 was used. ANSI A92-2018 includes these updated standards:
- A92.20 — design and construction requirements for MEWPs,
- A92.22 — safe use of MEWPs, and
- A92.24 — operator training requirements.
OSHA standards have only incorporated the 1969 version of A92.20. In a letter of interpretation, OSHA says that employers following more current A92 standards will be compliant with its standards, provided they’re at least as stringent as the 1969 version.
Employers can still use aerial lifts complying with older A92 versions. OSHA requires employers to follow manufacturer’s training requirements. Since manufacturers shifted to using A92.20-2020 beginning June 1, 2020, employers must be familiar with the 2020 updates. Some new requirements for MEWPs include wind and load sensors, improved stability, and increased handrail height.
Key to remember: Employers need to be familiar with A92-2020 because they must comply with the manufacturer’s requirements for training and understand safety features in new MEWPs.
