FMCSA allows CDL waiver through March 31 for school bus drivers
January 7, 2022
FMCSA is allowing states to temporarily waive the portion of the CDL skills test that requires school bus driver applicants to identify the under-the-hood engine components. All other components of the written and road test must be met. The FMCSA waiver, which became effective Jan. 3, 2022, expires Mar. 31, 2022.
While states are not required to waive the requirement, FMCSA explains that the waiver would widen the pool of possible drivers to fill the school bus driver role without compromising road safety. Currently, municipalities are experiencing a shortage of school bus drivers.
