EPA Takes Action to Reduce National Dependence on Oil
June 8, 2022
On June 3, 2022, the EPA finalized a suite of actions under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program to increase national energy security. The actions announced reinforce their commitment to providing more options for consumers at the pump by increasing the availability of nationally produced biofuels. Per section 211 of the Clean Air Act, the EPA must set standards to implement nationally applicable renewable fuel volume targets every year.
Actions taken under the RFS program include:
• Adjusted final biofuel volume requirements for 2020 -2022.
• Finalized regulatory framework to allow “biointermediates” to be included in the RFS program and compliance flexibility for regulated parties.
The EPA’s approved actions aim to promote efficiency and opportunity. The regulatory framework streamlines a pathway for producers to utilize biointermediates and expands access to the program for more cost-efficient biofuel production.
