As Hurricane Helene cleanup efforts continue, OSHA urges workers to be aware of hazards
October 4, 2024
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, OSHA urges workers involved in the cleanup and recovery efforts to be mindful of hazards. Cleanup efforts may involve hazards associated with restoring electricity, removing debris, and trimming trees. Proper training, experience, and familiarity with related equipment will help ensure worker safety.
OSHA’s recommendations come amid efforts to finalize its proposed emergency response rule. This rule is intended to expand protections for emergency responders who provide services other than firefighting, such as medical and technical search and rescue services.
To ensure protection, employers and workers should:
- Evaluate work areas for hazards
- Assess the stability of structures and walking surfaces.
- Ensure fall protection when working from elevated surfaces.
- Assume all powerlines are live.
- Operate chainsaws, portable generators, and other equipment properly.
- Use personal protective equipment, such as gloves, hard hats, and eye protection.
Additional information and resources on what to do in case of a weather emergency can be found on OSHA’s website.
