AI in the workplace: DOL offers principles, best practices

With the increased use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace, the Department of Labor (DOL) has released a set of principles and best practices for developers and employers to follow. Artificial Intelligence and Worker Well-being: Principles for Developers and Employers provides guidance to consider throughout the AI lifecycle – from design to use to auditing.
The principles include:
- Centering worker empowerment,
- Ethically developing AI,
- Establishing AI governance and human oversight,
- Ensuring transparency in AI use,
- Protecting labor and employment rights,
- Using AI to enable workers,
- Supporting workers impacted by AI, and
- Ensuring responsible use of worker data.
Developers and employers should review these principles and best practices and tailor them to their workplace.
